Hepatitis C Treatment Snapshot
...
Treatment experiences of people with bleeding disorders
I’ve had hepatitis C treatment for 6 months and it didn’t affect me. I just went straight through it.
I had flu-like symptoms, particularly during the first 4 weeks, a lot of nausea, a lot of fatigue. I needed to rest a lot to deal with those things. Certainly there were personality changes for the whole duration of the treatment and probably for several years afterwards. You become less tolerant, certainly harder to live with, moody.
I’ve been on two courses of treatment now and both times I’ve relapsed as well. I’m at a loss now where to go.
* Some have already had successful treatment
* For others, treatment has failed or they relapsed after treatment, particularly if they had interferon monotherapy in the early 1990s
* Some have chosen not to have treatment again until the success rates improve
* Some do not currently have treatment options, as available treatments had not been successful or their liver disease is too advanced
* Some have had no or few side-effects
* Others have had moderate to severe side-effects, including depression and fatigue.
If it’s less effective, then depending on the side-effects it had, I might not do it because it would be too much of a burden to carry. Already on my [haemophilia] prophylaxis I have to do that every 2 days, plus whatever else.
But then you have to weigh up the options of what’s going to happen in the future. Am I going to be for a year and a half or two years Depressed In the Corner Dad then maybe clear the virus, or am I going to be Thirty Years Dead Dad.

High-Dose and Long-Term Therapy of alpha Interferon in Hemophiliac Patients With Chronic C Virus Hepatitis
...
We enrolled 26 patients with hemophilia A (17 patients), hemophilia B (4 patients), von Willebrand disease (3 patients), and other congenital coagulopathies (2 patients). The mean age was 39 ± 10 years. All patients had serum anti-HCV, HCV-RNA using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method, and ALT values greater than twice the upper limit of normal range on three consecutive occasions 6 months apart before enrollment.

According to the definition of response by Rumi et al,1 we found the following results. Fifteen (58%) treated patients had a complete biochemical and virologic response at the end of treatment (12 months). Ten (38%) had sustained complete remission and the end of follow-up (24 months) and 5 (19%) had biochemical and virologic relapse after cessation of interferon therapy. Four of these patients received another course of interferon treatment at the same schedule and 2 of the 4 achieved a sustained complete remission with a follow-up of at least 6 months. Six of the total (23%) were nonresponses and 5 (19%) left the treatment (2 cases for interferon toxicity).
In addition, we found surprisingly higher complete response and complete sustained response rates than rates reported until now in hemophiliac patients treated with other schedules of interferon.

As you may have guessed, I have Haemophilia A (a kind of bleeding disorder). It is the worst kind apparently (severe) where I am left with less than 1% of the naturally present clotting factor (Factor VIII) in my blood needed to...er...clot my blood properly;) And as a result of treating the bleeds (by way of injection) that Haemophilia can cause I inadvertently infected myself with Hep C & HIV. I am still waiting to see if I got the mad cows disease too (vCJD) Moooo!.....Now that would explain a few things;)
I am treating my Haemophilia as I have always done (since I was two) and my HIV has been well under control since 1987 thanks to all the tablets that I consume twice a day each and every day. And my Hep C has been treated too (I finished 48wks Interferon/Ribavirin back in Feb 2007). I had my six month post treatment 'SVR' blood test taken on July 4th 2007 and on Thursday July 19th 2007 found out that my Hep C has gone & done a runner. And six months later again (Jan 2008), it is still undetectable! Basically, I'm cured of that one:) He's up in Hep C heaven apparently involved in some kind of viral orgy! Let him get on with it I say...& maybe one day my HIV will end up there with him and leave me with just the one "H" in my life (Haemophilia). Otherwise, I just try and get on with life......mostly keeping fit & healthy, annoying people, managing the constant pain in my joints & picking my nose;)
One Sad Transmission Down...
Negative, Off Treat For 9 Months Or More. How Do You Feel?

I was terrified at the start that I wouldn't be able to do any kind of stuff like that because of muscle waste etc from the side of tx. But I was so determined to try and keep fit early on and so far things are fine. I get pain in my joints regularly, but nothing more than normal (joint damage from Haemophilia). Otherwise, I just get the normal muscle buzz that evening, and usually ready for more cycling the next day, but normally leave it a day (day on, day off, so to speak) with some light upper body free weights on the days off.

Is Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection More Benign in Patients With Hemophilia?
